Abstract
Many university archives and special collections were originally conceived to collect and preserve campus administrative records, but as such institutions have evolved, the importance of collecting student life related materials has gained more recognition. Preserving student life related materials is beneficial to students and universities in that it assists in creating a sense of campus culture across time. University archives and special collections across the country are developing collecting policies and practices relating to student life materials applicable to each university’s unique needs. Increasing the university’s collection of student life materials, particularly from student organizations, is an identified goal of the University of Mary Washington University Archives and Special Collections. This project is focused on a survey of UMW student organizations conducted by the author regarding archival materials they may possess as well as potential interest in collaborating with or donating to university archives and special collections. The conclusions of the survey, along with current scholarship on the issue, will inform recommendations given to UMW University Archives and Special Collections.
