Abstract

Augustine Washington, most notably the father of George Washington, was a lower gentry class man in early 18th century Virginia, who held considerable land and prestige. Washington owned and modified three properties and houses during the final 10 years of his life. The choices of these properties were impacted by changing circumstances that were financial, social, and familial in nature. Popes Creek Plantation is located in the upper Tidewater region and Little Hunting Creek and Ferry Farm are located in Northern Virginia, within an approximately 500 square mile area. By comparing what is known about the appearances of these buildings with the outbuildings and certain artifact classes related to equines, the impacts of certain circumstances on these properties can be evaluated.
